Cézanne at the Grand Palais — Painting Lives On

Sometimes a mountain, a few apples or a cloth laid across a table is enough for painting to open up a world. In Cézanne’s work, colour gives light a tangible presence; forms emerge, respond to one another and find their balance. Our gaze slows down. What seemed familiar becomes a discovery.
Presented at the Grand Palais from 23 September 2026 to 17 January 2027, “Cezanne et nous” explores the enduring presence of his work in art. Almost 180 works bring Cézanne into dialogue with artists who have taken up, transformed or questioned his ideas: Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Joan Mitchell, Bridget Riley and Peter Doig.

This conversation reaches across generations. A mountain becomes a structure of colours; a still life, a space held together by relationships between things. Painting teaches us to notice what happens between an object and its neighbour, between shadow and light, between the visible world and the painter’s freedom.
On Fabricia Lepoutre’s website, the exhibition offers a chance to extend our attention to lived-in spaces, tables, windows and the colours that bring a place to life. This connection is an invitation to look: every artist invents a personal way of allowing the world to breathe within a painting.
Looking at Cézanne today means rediscovering the moment when painting becomes an adventure. An adventure that continues whenever a painter places a colour on the canvas and someone pauses to look.
