In Honfleur, painting seems to begin before we even enter a museum. A changing sky, a façade reflected in the water, light passing across the quays: the landscape invites us to pause. Then paintings teach us to look again.

The Eugène-Boudin Museum brings together works by painters who found inspiration here: Boudin, Dubourg, Courbet, Jongkind, Monet, and later artists with their own visions of Normandy. Its collections trace a history of painting through skies, landscapes, seascapes and the sensations a place can awaken.

This autumn, the exhibition celebrating the seventieth anniversary of the Friends of the Eugène-Boudin Museum, known as SAMEB, continues until 3 January 2027. It celebrates acquisitions and works brought into the collections through the association. Behind a collection lies another patient story: works chosen, passed on and made available for everyone to see.

The exhibition invites us to think of collecting as a living connection. A painting travels through the years because someone makes room for it, returns to it and shares it. Painting retains its power to surprise us long after that first encounter.
